Many people will be saddened by the passing away of my ‘noble friend’ David Shutt on Friday. David fought 7 general elections as a Liberal/Liberal Democrat, became a Councillor in 1973 and became a Lib Dem Peer in 2000, serving as Chief Whip to our Lib Dem group from 2005 and as Government Deputy Chief Whip for the coalition between 2010 and 2012. Most recently we worked closely together on the issue of trying to get the Government to ensure, or at least to encourage young people to be registered to vote and able to participate in our democracy. He moved the successful amendment on this and which was carried in the House of Lords by 293 to 215. Our condolences to Margaret and all his family and friends.
