It is a legal requirement to co-operate with the electoral registration process. The 2014 legislation states that failure to co-operate can result in a £1,000 fine.
Lord Rennard states that the Electoral Registration process needs to be made simpler and more efficient. Improvements such as, the clear mention of the fine for not registering to vote. As the mention of it on forms improves a response.
He proposes to make the whole process simpler for people to verify that they are already registered to vote. Suggestions such as online registration in order for people to verify their registration. Lord Rennard supports automatic voter registration or a direct voter registration process. The Electoral Commission estimates that up to 9.4 million eligible voters were missing from electoral roll. Automatic voter registration would mean the electoral register would be more representative of our country as a whole.
