There has been a U-turn on providing providing additional funding for a Covid summer food fund. There will be a free school meal voucher system which will enable children who are eligible for free school meals to claim vouchers for the six-week summer holiday period.
Lord Rennard has suggests that the big supermarkets that are involved could contribute to the cost of the voucher scheme or that they could provide additional benefits to those using the vouchers?
The response:
The cost to the taxpayer is the face value of the vouchers. The administration costs of the summer food fund are borne in the arrangement between Edenred, the supplier, and the supermarkets themselves.
